Guard Your Heart

Proverbs 4:23 (New International Version 1984)
Above all else, guard your heart,
for it is the wellspring of life.

Summer is around the corner. Hot weather, time spent at the swimming hole, vacations, reading… The coming of summer brings lots of plans, hopes and dreams.

Proverbs 4:23 (Holman Christian Standard Bible)
Guard your heart above all else,
for it is the source of life.

Maybe you’re going to spend some time at a beach. I love the beach. I love the sand between my toes, the salty smell on the air, the cool breeze off the water, the warm sun on my face and enjoying the evening sunset as the sun sinks into the horizon.

Proverbs 4:23 (New Living Translation)
Guard your heart above all else,
for it determines the course of your life.

Perhaps you’re going to take your family to Disney World, Six Flags, Hurricane Harbor, a baseball game, or some other large family fun event. Roller coasters whipping through the sky, college kids dressed as larger-than-life cartoon animals, floating the lazy river, watching the young star Starlin Castro score the winning run as the Cubs beat the Astros…

Proverbs 4:23 (New King James Version)
Keep your heart with all diligence,
For out of it spring the issues of life.

Maybe you and your spouse are going to take a trip by yourselves to some far-off exotic place like Cancun, Las Vegas, or a Caribbean cruise. You’ll eat delectable foods, see sights, play games, perhaps pull some slots, roll dice, or lay some cards on the table while you enjoy a beverage…

Don’t forget that lust begins in the heart. The sand, water, wind and sunsets are not the only attractive things at the beach. Don’t forget to guard your heart. Those glistening bodies are going to be hard to miss, so guard your heart.
